Emission Tests

Motor vehicle service

A motor vehicle service is a series of maintenance procedures carried out at a set time interval or after the vehicle has traveled a certain distance. The service intervals are specified by the vehicle manufacturer in a service schedule and some modern cars display the due date for the next service electronically on the instrument panel.
The completed services are usually recorded in a service book which is rubber stamped by the service centre upon completion of each service. A complete service history usually adds to the resale value of a vehicle.

A timing belt, timing chain or cam belt is a part of an internal combustion engine that synchronizes the rotation of the crankshaft and the camshaft(s) so that the engine’s valves open and close at the proper times during each cylinder’s intake and exhaust strokes. In an interference engine the timing belt or chain is also critical to preventing the piston from striking the valves. A timing belt is a belt that usually features teeth on the inside surface, while a timing chain is a roller chain.

When it comes to car servicing, timing belt replacement is without doubt the most important serviceable component of a car’s engine. The timing belt has an incredibly important job controlling the camshafts in the engine and keeps it running smoothly, if left unchanged and it breaks, it can seriously lighten your wallet.

Suspension is the term given to the system of springs, shock absorbers and linkages that connects a vehicle to its wheels and allows relative motion between the two. Suspension systems serve a dual purpose — contributing to the vehicle’s road-holding/handling and braking for good active safety and driving pleasure, and keeping vehicle occupants comfortable and reasonably well isolated from road noise, bumps, and vibrations etc. These goals are generally at odds, so the tuning of suspensions involves finding the right compromise. It is important for the suspension to keep the road wheel in contact with the road surface as much as possible, because all the road or ground forces acting on the vehicle do so through the contact patches of the tires. The suspension also protects the vehicle itself and any cargo or luggage from damage and wear. The design of front and rear suspension of a car may be different. Shock absorbers and struts are vital for on road safety performing the function of keeping the tyres evenly connected with the road, and maintaining a vertical load on the tyres. The shock absorbers on your car go through as many as one thousand movements per kilometre so it is not surprising that they wear out quite quickly and should be checked every 20,000 kilometres.

A vehicle brake is a brake used to slow down a vehicle by converting its kinetic energy into heat. The basic hydraulic system, most commonly used, usually has six main stages. The brake pedal, the brake boost (vacuum servo), the master cylinder, the apportioning valves and finally the road wheel brakes themselves.
Anti-lock braking system (ABS) is an automobile safety system that allows the wheels on a motor vehicle to maintain contact with the road surface according to driver inputs while braking, preventing the wheels from locking up (ceasing rotation) and avoiding uncontrolled skidding. Typically ABS includes a central electronic control unit (ECU), four wheel speed sensors, and at least two hydraulic valves within the brake hydraulics. The ECU constantly monitors the rotational speed of each wheel. If a fault develops in any part of the ABS, a warning light will usually be illuminated on the vehicle instrument panel, and the ABS will be disabled until the fault is rectified.

The brakes operate on a hydraulic system that begins with brake fluid located in the engine compartment. When you push the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure builds and is transferred to each wheel to push the brake shoes against the drums and the pads against the rotors. This friction slows the vehicle in proportion to the force applied to the brake pedal. Routine brake inspections and maintenance help to ensure that your vehicle’s brake system operates as designed at all times.
The brake fluid should be flushed and replaced about every 30 months/30,000 miles or based on your vehicle manufacturer’s specifications.

Wheel alignment, sometimes referred to as breaking or tracking, is part of standard automobile maintenance that consists of adjusting the angles of the wheels so that they are set to the car maker’s specification. The purpose of these adjustments is to reduce tire wear, and to ensure that vehicle travel is straight and true (without “pulling” to one side or steering wheel vibration). Alignment angles can also be altered beyond the maker’s specifications to obtain a specific handling characteristic.
